How do news reporters stare directly at the camera..

Read ahead and don't worry about it being verbatim.

I took a TV productions class that was located in a News studio years ago and actually tried doing it and it's pretty difficult to have it not look like you're reading, but the news casters are well practiced and it's just something that comes with time.

Put the screen directly below the camera. Simple enough really.

They actually have the teleprompter directly in front of the lens of the camera IIRC.

good question. the teleprompter monitor lies face up right in front of the camera lens. the reporter reads the teleprompter off a glass mirror which sits directly in front of the camera.
