Lived in DC area for 28 years

Good places to rent that are near a metro include:

-Huntington (better than it used to be, cheapest option, walking distance to metro)
-Old town alexandria (nice town, close to king street and braddock road stations)
-Crystal city (not much to do at night, but close to old town, close to crystal city metro)
-Arlandria (between crystal city and old town, might need a bus to get to a subway station).

Definitely stay out SE DC - it is a shithole.

Gallery PLace China Town is a nice spot to live in DC< but can get pricey. Dupont circle is nice as well.

OP, just curious, did you actually mean to write "How do I washington DC?" (referencing to a meme or something), or did you accidentally forget a few words?

dc rules. haters gonna hate.

hard to find a city as beautiful with as many intelligent, educated people (elected officials are an exception).

If they are really intelligent, educated, why the heck do they work for the govt?

Look for something in Arlington or Alexandria close to a station that serves the Yellow line. Yellow line trains will take you right to L'Enfant Plaza. The stations are King Street, Braddock Road, and Crystal City, and Pentagon City.

Find anywhere near a metro and you're good. Stay out of NE or SE DC. End of story.

I figured it was this one and responded appropriately.

Good benefits, not bad pay, job security, and perhaps a little bit of idealism about the role of government in society. That last bit usually gets burned out of you pretty quickly by the lazy, slipshod, entitled morons in the cubicles around you, though.

I would actually try to find somewhere in VA that is metro accessible, but that's just me (cheaper)

Disagree. Live in the city, find a place to share/split the rent.

The "it" places to live...for the young and hip...

Adam's Morgan/Dupont Area (NW)
Logan Circle Area (NW)
Columbia Heights (NW)
U-Street Corridor (NW)
NOMA NW (North of Mass)
Penn Quarter NW
H Street Corridor NE
Eastern Market SE

First thing to buy when you arrive: SmartTrip card or a bike.

Learn the Metro (www.wmata.com)

Learn about what's going on (www.dcist.com)

Network...network...network...network! Meet the right people and they can send your career to new heights. Don't waste too much time hanging with people your own age (interns) unless you're looking for the hookup.

DC is a conservative place. You may need to dress that way! Got a suit? Tie?

Get ready for a HOT and humid summer!

Be mentally prepared! DC is FULL of extremely well-educated, smart, high-achieving, TYPE A people who can come off as cold, rude, indifferent, and willing to do anything to get ahead. Think you're special? You're not really that special. And don't ask too many questions. A lot of people here can't REALLY tell you what they do. But you can be sure that the question, "What do you do?" will be the first one they ask.

Don't plan on saving much if any $$$. DC is one of the most expensive cities in the US now.

anyone have any opinion on these places?

i realize the price is a bit high. but i've never done apartment hunting before, and the thought of doing it without ever having been to the city makes me really concerned.

Rosa Mexicano - great place. bit pricey, but food is awesome.

Zengo is great too - latin/asian fusion.

yup that is it, has great food. definitely more upscale of a restaurant.

also as far as spanish food in general goes, lauriol plaza is awesome. as is ceiba. la tasca is also good if you like tapas places. there is also jaleo which is more of a chain place though, but it's good.

Haha. DC doesn't have good Mexican by West Coast standards at least.

Best restaurant I've found is Casa Oaxaca.

But seriously, DC doesn't have that "hole in the wall, amazing, cheap Mexican food" place that you find in Texas, Utah, California, etc.

Yes I agree, Mexican food is my favorite and there's nothing here compares to what I ate when I was visiting Houston and Austin.

And once you eat the crab cakes on the EC, you'll spit out those crab flavored bread cakes they pawn out west.

It would be nice if food could catch up with the internet. Maybe we could print our meals on our new 3d printers one day :D

DC might not, but DC area certainly does. As evidence, I present Taco Bar - the best Mexican restaurant that is also a gas station and liquor store that you will ever find.

just got to your ...fine... coast.

it's very hot. and muggy.

Heat wave starts today.

Maybe it'll be a little better next week before it settles back down to hot and muggy for the rest of summer.

The heat and humidity used to be very beneficial to the rest of the country as well as the local residents. It limited the time the politicians could stay and cause mischief and pretty much kept the tourists at bay from May until October. Sadly air conditioning ruined that.
