how do i use two monitors with a SLI setup?

So I turned off my system and plugged in my second monitor into the same card that was powering my first. Usually at the post both monitors will come on but only the new one I plugged in did and when I got into windows it said SLI had to be disabled and that a restart was required. Did I do something wrong here? Am I mean tto plug each monitor into a seperate card?

I thought that wasnt possible in SLi...

I thought it was the same as a single card. Just put them both on the first card and enable dual monitor.
