Do not attach it to your main bank account.

Best advice I can recommend. That's what I did with both of my accounts.

If not, there should be a bank in your area that does free checking. I have an account with Fifth Third only for paypal since their basic checking is free.

You can never be to paranoid.

1) Read and follow Paypal's Buyer Protection policies.

2) When paying for the auction I would pay using my credit card.

3) Verify and double verify their eBay feedback, send them an e-mail, maybe their eBay and/or Paypal account was hijacked.

4) Do not link Paypal to your main bank account. Most bank accounts will open a new account if you just ask. My wife has 2 checking accounts with her Credit Union. The first is her main account, the 2nd is for Paypal only transactions.

5) Read PaypalSucks.com and consider using other safer (INCONVENIENT but SAFER) methods of payment such as Money Order/Cashier's Check or BidPay.com

Do you need to tie it in to a savings account these days in order to use paypal? My account isn't tied to any bank, but I can buy items just fine.

Hmm.. Wonder how easy it would be to get a 2nd account from Wells Fargo.

I like this idea.

It helps if you don't fill out those verification forms PayPal sends to e-mail addresses you haven't given them asking for your password, bank account and pin number. :p

Been using it for a few years now, never had problems. Just be smart about your account info. And use the credit card transfer stuff instead of the bank account.

Dont know if it still applies but when i got paypal, i didnt add a bank account number. as such, i am limited to 2k total in transfers. since i rarely use ebay i still have about 1500 of that amount left. I added a credit card to which i can dispute the charge, where i stand on much firmer ground than with paypal who has taken money from bank accounts and then frozen the account.

Create an account, do not hook it to your bank account and register a credit card with a small limit and/or online fraud protection. Once you are done your transaction, remove the CC from your profile. Add it in every time you want to do a transaction.

Oh and never click on a link inside of any email that has to do with Paypal. Go to the URL directly through a book mark you created or your typing.
