How do I upgrade to Windows 98SE with the OEM CD?

I keep getting the SU0168 error which tells me I need to buy Win 98 upgrade version.

I tried renaming win.com and winver.exe. NOPE

I tried to extract setupx.dll from the base4.cab file in Windows 98SE so I could copy it to my hard drive.

I can extract the whole base4.cab file but can't extract setupX.dll from base4.cab.

I tried from a DOS prompt and using the Win system file checker extract utility. My sytax is right but nothing works.

Any ideas?

Backup up before you proceed.

Try to delete MSDOS.SYS, IO.SYS, COMMAND.COM, DETLOG.*, SETUPLOG.*, SYSTEM.1ST & BOOTLOG.*

Before you run Setup. Rename c:\windows\win.com to win.old (or whatever). Then run it and should run fine. System builder trick 😉

Thanks for the info. I did hear that somewhere but I forgot what it was about. And it does actually UPGRADE keeping the win95 settings and programs right? Thanks a lot guys.
