How do I upgrade this?

Update: A few things changed, and it was hard to find a P67 mobo, but I eventually found one. ;) And got a great discount on the GTX 470.

This is what I have so far:
Asus P67 Sabertooth
2500K (ordered)
Sparkle 470GTX

******************************************

I sold my old PC and now I'm thinking of building this:

2500K - $240 (A friend of mine will bring this for me from the US)
ASUS P8P67 INTEL P67 1333FSB (LGA1155) Rs 16500
KINGSTON DDR3 4GB-1333 VALUE Rs 4300
ATI HD 6850 PciXpress Rs 18500
SEAGATE 1000GB 3.5" HDD 32MB Cache (ST-31000528AS) Rs 6100
COOLER MASTER (EXTREME POWER) 460W (RS-460-PCAR-A3) (12V/18A) Rs 3500
COOLER MASTER (COOLING SOLUTION) HYPER 212 PLUS Rs 2400
Generic case ~Rs 2000
ASUS DVDRW SATA (DRW-24B1ST) Rs. 2200

Sub Total: rs55,550 + $260
Total: $912

A good build? I can also buy other parts from the USA but that will mean it will be harder to claim warranty. I'm mainly considering getting another graphics cards. The 6850 is approx. $220 here. Can I get a better deal in the USA? What about the RAM? I'm paying about $50 for the 4GB stick. SB motherboards are hard to find in the USA and the PSU will be heavy and not worth bringing.

Suggestions?

Is the PSU enough?

**Original Post**

I'm thinking of upgrading my gaming PC which I haven't used much in the last year. This is because I use my laptop instead which is a icore5 with a 330M and 4 GB RAM. It works well for most games on medium settings but I haven't tried anything more demanding than ME2 or SC2 yet.

This is what I have:

E4400 2.0 GHZ processor
Intel DG965RY
XFX 7900GS
Kingston DD2 2GB 667MHZ (2 x 1GB)

I was thinking of getting a 460GTX and getting more RAM but would I be bottlenecked by the processor? I don't want to spend more than Rs 20,000. Here is the price list: http://galaxy.pk/

I do have other options such as getting an overclockable mobo or upgrading the processsor. I would recover some of cost by selling my old stuff.

For now I game on 1680x1050. I don't really a good place to put a PC and I'm waiting until I move later this year to build a new setup. :)

have you tried overclocking your cpu?

Code:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/267600-30-overclock-intel-dg965ry-mobo

also, what power supply do you have now?

It's a generic 380W but it hasn't caused my any problem.

Fine, but it might cause a big problem if you overclock or put higher-powered parts in as upgrade.

How many Amps can that PSU deliver on the 12V rail? That's the main determining factor for powering a modern graphics card.

It has 18A. I actually do have quite a bit to spend, but I want the best bang for the buck upgrade.

Is there a second 12V rail (ie 12V1 and 12V2)?

If not, that's a problem

18A*12V = 216 watts on the 12V line

not only is that inadequate, it also tells me it's old, cheap design

a modern 380 like the Antec EA-380D has 336 watts available on the 12V lines, that's 55% more useful power at the same wattage rating, which was marginal to begin with.

what are your future plans? are you going to build a new rig? what sort of timeframe? just stick with laptops from now on?

you said you had Rs 20,000 to spend... According to your galaxy pricing list.. that would only cover the cost of the 460 graphics card...

Honestly, you're probably better off holding off, and upgrading everything at once. and not try to build around that older platform.. If you do go that route, pick components that can easily be transferred to your next build (i.e Graphics and PSU)..

What's the best bang for the buck *new* build from that galaxy list? I bought my last rig as a whole and the last rig I built myself was a 3200+ A64 long ago. Now I have the time to build and play but I don't know what I should do. The 20,000 will buy me an Xbox, but I'm pretty sure I want a PC. As I said though, I could probably add a few more thousands to those 20....

With a 460GTX in my current rig, will it be faster than my laptop for gaming?

I might be moving to Canada for my master's in fall. On the one hand I have nothing to do right now and I have many games piled up to play. On the other, when I move... I don't know. Will I need a portable laptop for graduate study.

....must resist urge to build a new.. ARGHH :D
Actually, I'll just sell it off...

I'm playing ME2 right now on my laptop after ME1 and it has a cool story and fun gameplay :)

most likely, especially if you can get the CPU overclocked, although any particular game might be CPU or memory limited

you would definitely need a new powersupply too

but with all your uncertainty, if your laptop is good enough, I would just stick with that

As others have said, you'll need a GPU and PSU for sure. The memory and CPU would then become a bottleneck, so you're pretty much looking at replacing the whole system. The GTX 460 and PSU by itself would give you increased performance, but it would not be working at its full potential.

From your link:
Phase 1:
GTX 460 17500 Rs.
Corsair 430CX 4800 Rs.

Phase 2:
i5 760 18800 Rs.
ASUS P7P55 LX 11350 Rs.
2x Kingston DDR3 1333 2GB 2x2100 = 4200 Rs.

Silly question, but how do rebates actually work?

You just fill out a form saying who you are where you live (it is usually USA ONLY) then you mail it to them with a copy of the receipt and they mail you back a check or prepaid gift card in a few weeks.

That won't work for me then sadly.

well if that is the case try and find a 6870 in the US for 220 and you can get it from your friend, or if you can find a 6870 there for under 18600 PKR get it.

6870 is for $270 here. Friend is in NJ so he'll be charged tax from Newegg.

I can also get a 768MB 460GTX for the same price as a 6850 1GB. Which will be faster @ 1680x1050?
