I am installing Windows XP and already formatted the C: drive in preparation to install, but I keep getting error. So I am trying to unpartition the C: and D: drive which make up a single 30.0GB Maxtor hard drive......how do I do this using windows 98 boot disk or anything else?

if you are trying to install win XP...
i'm assuming ... that you're doing this from WinXP cd.

one of the first steps is to identify the partition that you want to install in to.

from that screen... you can actually delete partitions.
read the whole screen...
it'll ask you to press "d" for deletion... and "L" for confirmation.

of course... you can do this with fdisk.exe as well which is included in win98 boot disk.

boot with the win98 boot disk and run fdisk and delete all the partitions

then let XP installer partition the drive or at least the first/boot partition, then you can do others after its installed

you might want to repartition, but i don't think you should make your o/s partition 30GB:p somethjing like 6GB should be reasonable.. the reason being if you have to reinstall your os and format c: u won't lose all your stuff. that and you'll be able to make a ghost image as backup very easily. and restore without losing everything.

this is a very good point. I prefer 3 partitions myslef, one OS, one application, and one storage.

I went one further..
I made 1 application / OS, 1 game, 1 storage, 1 "system" which has all XP's files from CD, my pagefile, and all my documents.
I'm being VERY anal about keeping my drive organized now.
Oh yeah I also have a 40GB secondary drive that i sitll dont know what to do with. :p
