I'm playing a music cd on my pc with the ECS K7S5A Pro mainboard. I'm using WinAmp and it seems to stagger when I multiprocess. I plugged in the audio out wire from the cd drive to the cd1 plug on the mobo but when I pulled the plug on the audion out, it still played. Must be bypassing the wire to the cpu. How do I change that.
I'm using win98, but I plan to milti-boot, so how would I fix that in win98 and XP.

Thanks.

You must have enabled digital CD audio for this device. I don't have Win98 but in Win2k, I access the Properties tab for the CDROM in the Device Manager to be able to turn this feature on and off.

Control Panel --> Sytem --> Device Manager --> DVD/CD-ROM Devices --> Double-click on corresponding CDROM Device --> Properties Tab

Hope that helps.:light:

I went there and found only 4 options I can change on the settings tab.
1. Disconnect ............... checked
2. Sync data transfer ... unchecked
3. Auto insert notification ...checked
4. DMA .............................unchecked

Nothing about digital cd audio. Maybe elsewhere.

you need to check the enable DMA box, this will help with the stuttering you are getting.

That, and maybe increase Winamp's priority a bit.
Preferences -> Options, and try High. I don't know that Realtime is a good idea; I've not tried it personally, but what I do know about CPU priorities is that when a realtime process wants the CPU's full attention, it gets it. It won't wait for another program to finish up what it's doing.

Similar to when I decided to put SoB's priority to high. Deciding to be cocky I thought, "Bah AXP 1800+ oc'd to 2100 speed, it wont struggle a bit!"

Of course 5 mins later when I attempted browsing the web I had to wait 5 mins before I could even get the client open to change the setting

I don't think I've made myself clear or this issue.
One can either play a music cd using the wire that runs from the back of the cd drive to the mainboard, or not.
I have found that using that wire, I don't notice delays at all. How can I ensure that is how the music cd is played? Obviously, in contrast, playing a cd with mp3s, that cable need not be connected.
Help me out here please with the proper lingo to describe these 2 processes. I'm sounding like an idiot fumbling for the proper terminology.

If you want Digital CD Quality audio played directly from a normal CD / DVD then you must use the digital cable from the back of the drive to the soundcard / mainboard connector.

Obviously for mp3's as its data transfer theres no need for any other cable other than the IDE cable.

To use the Digital Audio you need to enable the CD Digital checkbox in the volume control window & also make sure you disable the CD Audio checkbox.

That was it. :D I finally found the entry for checking digital audio and I'm pretty sure now it's working. I could open the case and try yanking the plug out, but all I did was start Windows explorer and Acrobat reader and not a hickup.
It was in the control panel under 'Multimedia' on the 'CD Music' tab.

Thanks to all.

ps. BTW Dannyboy, I didn't notice the CD Audio checkbox, but it doesn't seem to matter.
