How do I throw a monitor away?

I know you can't actually throw it away, seeing as it is highly toxic etc. etc. I have a old 13inch monitor that can still be used but I want to get rid of it. Do schools or libraries usually take this kind of stuff? Would the salvation army take it?

If you live near a large city, ther is usually a recycling program.

At work, our dumpster folks will accept monitors as long as the cords have been snipped (I don't understand the reasoning, but thats their rule)

Trashmen take ours curbside, usually someone else gets 'em first... wonder how many times that happens before it does end up in the trash?

We have the same rule here in Canada, and the reasoning is that it is against the company policy to dumpster diving. Because many companies & the union believe that dumpster diving is unsafe & promote theft.

Usually there are programs set up locally to properly dispose of electronic equipment. I know CRT's have lead in them, which can contaminate ground water.

I always put mine on the curb and the garbage man takes it all the time (put 6 or 7 out so far)

at the university here, they have dozens of "loading docks" for various buildings all over campus. a truck comes by to take the equipment from them every thursday. so I just dump stuff there. I also sometimes go scavenging and get some old scsi cards and nics and such

I recently threw out 3 old monitors. Just put them into constuction-site trashbags and put them on the curb. :)

I once beat the sh!t out of one with a baseball bat, it was an old monitor, had really think glass on it (the first swing, the bat just obunced off the glass, took 4 or 5 good swings to completely distory the glass). After it was smashed, we pured some gas on it and set it on fire :) (looked really cool since their was snow on the ground at the time). That was a lot of fun, have a video of it too :).

Anyways, in the United States a person can throw away just about anything legally, it is classifed as Household Hazardous Waste, and there are basically no regulations of it. However, businesses basically can not throw away anything, for example it is illegal for a company to throw away froscent (sp?) light bulbs, batteries and even latex paint. In short give it to the trashman.

Edit: BTW: Dumping in someone else's dumpster is illegal, so I wouldn't recommend doing that. ;)

Link, but also be aware of Link

It seems to be rather popular to claim to recycle yet just ship the stuff over seas and pile it in a landfill. Electronic gear is full of all sorts of fun stuff that's kinda hard to reclaim without spending a ton of money.
