My black uce defender is blinking and working overtime........i get laggy here and there and I put my security level to cautious, not nervous, or paranoid. Any clues on how I could stop this or how I could get them back?

You have a few possibilities:

Start using NetBSD :)
OR
Get ZoneAlarm. It is free, and CNet seems to think it is really excellent.

Stay away from crazy people with machettes!;)

Seriously, if you're using a firewall of some sort, you're not actually be hacked, but you are under attack. Check the log and get the IP of the attack source. Then using something like NeoTrace, try to find out the attacker's ISP and then contact them. They may be interested in people using their lines to bother others which would be a big TOS no-no.

Good luck.

Definitely get Zone Alarm. I use mine with phasers set on KILL. Every now and then, it reports probes by the strangest places.

You can test the security of your system at Gibson Research with no firewall, your Black Ice or with Zone Alarm on line. That will give you some idea of your vulnerablity.

I use BID.

There's no way to stop it. They are usually running random Internet scans for open ports.
