I'm getting these very annoying and freaky porn emails on my POP3 mail. I keep unsubscribing and they keep coming back. Is there anyway that I can block these?

BTW..when I mean freaky...I'm talking stuff like rape videos and animal acts etc...

NEVER unsubscribe. All that does is validate your address as active and they sell your address to even more spammers as a verified good one.

1. Get a free Yahoo, Hotmail, whatever account and ONLY give that one out on the net.
2. Change your primary email address - only give it out to friends or legitimate merchants and make sure they don't screw that one up by sending you online greeting cards and junk like that as all those sites do is collect email addresses.

Once you are on the lists, you are pretty much screwed. I get about 80 a day. :|

My ISP offers an optional Spam filter that checks all of my emails and if determined to be Spam, they either delete them or pass them on with a modified subject line. Occasionally good stuff gets filtered so I opt to have them pass the messages on to me and I have Outlook automatically move any messages with the modified subject line into a Spam folder that I scan and delete once a week or so. Maybe your ISP offers a similar service?

Thanks for that info...what is really weird is that all these emails have the same background and font and style. I believe they are from the same place.

If one of 'em got you, it won't be long before many more do. I really hate that junk.

What's worse is the content. It's easy to ignore the text only ones but when you start getting the ones that have animated graphics in them and even sound, that's getting TOO much.

You're not kidding. I usually just se the arrow key and scroll up in my mail and every now and then I get one with sound. I scroll up to it and all of a sudden if my speakers are on I have what sound like a barn in my living room. Those horses in there aren't just eating hay either.

This is a constant battle. I currently use Mail Washer. It is pretty good in that it lets you see all headers BEFORE you download. Then you can create a blacklist that will bounce crap back to the sender and retain only what you want. Then you download after the crap is deleted from your POP3 server.

In spite of all its many shortcomings, the best anti-spam system is available to AOL users. There is a very restricted mode which will only allow designated addressees to send you mail - all others are rejected. I keep a backup AOL account (minimum, $4.95/mo) for travel purposes, and I never get a single piece of Spam there because it only accepts designated addresses. The rest are rejected with a DAEMON back to the sender. Very cool!

Using MailWasher may help. It basically bounces back the spam mails by indicating your e-mail address as an invalid adress. You can select which emails to bounce back & delete. It's a freeware. It won't completely get rid of those spammers though. Having different email addresses for different purposes is a better way to go I think.

you don't need aol to reject emails from people outside of your addressbook.
you can achieve this by using outlook or many other softwares.

for that matter... you don't need aol.

anyhow... seeing that this isn't anti-aol thread... i'll move right along.

there's no way to make your email spam proof.
for an example... let say that you have your account setup so that only the people in your address book can send you email....
that address book usually contains your address as well.

and anyone can send a message to look like it was actually coming from you.

to: stockjock@aol.com
from: stockjock@aol.com.

that filter wouldn't catch this.

of course there are ways to block same to-from email addys.
(which limits your capability of sending a message to yourself)

the best way to attack this issue is...
like others said... setup different email address for different purposes.
set up a junk email for yoru internet registration 's needs.
set up a personal email... and don't give that out to anyone that you don't know personally.
and make sure they only send direct emails. (no greeting cards)
and don't use hotmail / yahoo accounts... as they have dictionary spammers.
and they also seem to support spammers. :(

there are other interesting filters that you can set to minimize the spams.

for an example...
if the email contains 'copyright information'... chances are ... it's a spam.
if the email's from addy doesn't have first/last name... that's another flag.
if the email contains a javascript...
if the email contains a link ... another flag.

well the list goes on and on.. if there are enough flags... then the email gets treated as a spam.

I set up rules for my POP3 email account in outlook express. If it contains certain words it throws it into my SPAM folder, just in case its something that is important but conatins one of the words, it wont get deleted. I never knew rules existed in Outlook Express and its the coolest feature. My email has never been more organized :). And although others on here say don't opt-out or reply with remove, I have found that it actually works. I get less and less spam after I unsubscribe. There is actually a Spam Act that forces emails to have opt-out or they could have their internet accounts terminated. YMMV, of course, but try to setup rules its real cool.

Yea..that spam act works real well *sarcasim* Thats why they forge the headers, bounce the email through open relays, fudge URL's and have hosting in China. Spam is never legit so the Spam act is a joke.

Well I guess then I'm just lucky that it works for me *shrug*.

Well, you missed the point, Hoihtah. There is no way that OE or Eudora or etc. will do what I said - reject all email except those addresses authorized specifically. In OE and Eudora, etc., you have to do the reverse - list those addresses you don't want. Then they are put into a delete folder or what have you. You still have to download the damned things. Only AOL will do what I said. Like, I mean - ALL email not specifically authorized will be rejected. OE cannot do this.

It works for legitimate companies. "Unsubscribe" IS an option - but never for junk unsolicited spam (all you do is "confirm" your e-mail address to these @$$es and they sell your address for more spam for you).
