How do I start?

My new system should be showing up soon, so I'd like to start helping out like the rest of you, the problem is...I don't where to start. I looked at the folding@home sticky, but that's just for ATi cards? I'll have an nVidia card, so I can't even look into that.

I'll also be running Linux, are there *nix equivalents to any of these programs? I could always run it under WINE if I had to.

Oh, and just so I'm clear, this is the kind of thing like Prime95 (I think?) where it looks for Mersenne prime numbers? Or like that application that you would run that claims to help cancer research?

Any information and suggestions would be appreciated.

Edit: I also looked at the topmost sticky, but I'm still not entirely sure what to do.

Easiest thing to do is to go to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ and click Choose.

Create an account for whichever project you deem most fit, DL the client, attach the client to the project, then join your account to the TeAm.

BTW, Seti@Home is your daddy. :p

I thought the sticky said Seti@Home was discontinued. Can I still participate in it?

Distributed computing projects all currently only take advantage of your processor. Folding@Home is only just today releasing the open beta for their GPU client. No one else has any sort of equivelent.

BOINC is a great and easy way to split your CPU work between several projects that you might like to support.

I myself do work on Folding@Home. It's currently researching causes of cancer, Huntington's Disease, Alzhiemers and Parkinsons among a few others. Specifically how protien folding (how your body makes protiens).

You can download your flavor of the Folding@Home client here. I'd recommend using the commandline client if you are running windows. There are some issues with different graphics card drivers and the GUI client which will cause them to crash sometimes between units.

S@H Classic was discontinued. S@H is one of the largest DC projects around BOINC these days.

Don't do it!!! You will be stuck here for the next 7 years as I have. :) And you get to meet new, wonderfull computer geeklings that seem to know everything when it comes to computers.

Ok, so I have been around long enough to know that if you are going to do DC stuff, this is the place to be. And lets not forget about the beer tub chicks.

:)

Correction, the SETI@home web-site is http://setiathome.berkeley.edu the same it's actually been since 1999.
If you're trying to use wrong url, the BOINC-client will just detach you again. ;)

As for BOINC-projects, a good start-point is Released BOINC-projects with short description of the various projects, and for some can be important, OS-support, memory-requirements, bandwith-usage and so on.

For the more adventurous, there's also a link to alpha/beta-projects at the bottom of this page...

Also please note, Predictor@home is currently down, while they're developing a new application...
