I understand to stop Left 4 Dead stuttering, you have to turn off one core of a multicore CPU. How exactly is this done? Thanks.

Just run the program itself with process affinity set to your favorite core.

Oh, so I can set the game itself to use just one core?

While L4D is running, open the Task Manager. Right click on the L4D process (probably HL2.exe) and click Set Affinity. Then select one core.

Great, thanks.

As zerogear said you can turn in off within the settings inside of L4D. Setting the affinity to 1 when the game is trying to use 2 sounds like a bad idea.

Open up the game, got to settings then graphics section, then on the advanced tab. There should be a multicore option there that you can enable or disable. This will stop the stuttering with only a tiny decrease in FPS.

i have a quad core and i get occasional stuttering with audio where i get the spinning aero cursor. it usually resolves itself.

however i don't disable multi-core because when i look at my cpu usage while playing, all 4 of my cores are being utilized to some extent.

I had to do this as well (Core 2 Duo 6700, XP Pro). Every few minutes the game would stutter, loudly, for 5-10 seconds, after which I could resume my game.

L4D is a broken game.

The stuttering if you leave multicore rendering enabled is a widespread issue.

It seems that watching task manager though, it doesn't really disable the usage of the other cores...but it does stop the freezing/stuttering, so whatever...

Even on single threaded apps Windows will bounce the thread between the cores to keep one core from heating up too much.

I had this problem too, but only on my computer with an nvidia card and only with the latest nvidia drivers. If you have an nvidia card consider rolling back to an earlier driver version if you want to keep the multicore rendering option enabled. I can't remember which one it was that actually worked. You may have to go back a couple of driver releases.

the 182.05 beta forceware drivers fixes this stuttering issue.

the game was unplayable due to stuttering. I was browsing the steampowered forums and a valve employee confirmed that 182.05 fixes the multi-core stuttering bug.

I just got Left 4 Dead last week and there is absolutely no stuttering for me with the 181.22 drivers.
