How do I shop for scanners?

Christobevii was nice enough to give me some info about portable scanners. He says it's a bit slow. How do you measure scan speed? What is a good DPI for document scanning? What else do I need to look for in a scanner?

The first major decision is what form factor. Portables are usually sheet feed/pass through devices. No good for books, etc. If you want color photos scanned and color slides, that requires a special lid with a light source. After that, resolution is important, especially for error free OCR work. For that I want at least 400 DPI.
