How do I setup my own ftp server?

I would like to be able to share some photos and things with fellow families member who are far away. I believe the answer might be to set up a ftp server and let them download the information at their convenience. How do I do this? I have some machines that are always on and I am always connected to the internet. Are there any online resources that might be helpful as well?

Check out FileZilla for free FTP server software.

lots of different ftp server software solutions out there, personally I like to use Bulletproof FTP.

another good choice is serv-u - has a 30day trial for the ulimited version and then turns into a limited version after that, but still very good.

for a client you can't go wrong w/ the filezilla client, been running it for years myself :)

you run the server, your family members run the client. that way they can put a lot of items in their queue and let the ftp client d/l until it gets them all. you can view ftp servers through a browser, but that may take a bit of tweaking on your end.

might want to check out this site - http://www.dslwebserver.com/

You don't really need to worry about a client, internet explorer will work if nothing else.

It'd probably be easier for you to just put them up on flickr or any other photo sharing website. If you do host your own, you'll need to tell everyone your ip address (or use dyndns or something to get something like a real url) for them to connect to.

what OS are you running? MS usually has some ftp software buried in their code for the higher end OSes. If you are running XP Pro, then you can use IIS from the install CD and that will include an FTP and a webserver. Freeware/shareware options are also good...but I generally stay away. For me, I use my Linux server for all the file share stuff, usually with SSH.

By the way, you might also look into setting up an SSH server instead of an FTP server...depending on the use case. I used to have a hell of a time with firewalls and FTP, servers...then I switched to SSH and SCP for file transfers over the internet...I've never looked back.

do NOT use IIS on windows XP. It's IIS 5, aka the web/ftp server of Doom. Indiana Jones won't even run that stuff.

I am using xp service pack 2. I always connected to the internet. I would like to have one of my extra machines be the ftp server. When I am at school I would like to be able to grab stuff from it if I need. For example; if I leave in the morning for school and have a render running. I can have it save to the server (is that the right terminology?) and then when I need it in a later class I can use my ip address and login in to grab it.

My current setup: My main computer is connected to the internet via a wireless network card which talks to the modem elsewhere in the house. The computer I want to use as the ftp server and leave on 24 hrs a day is connected to the main computer through a network in my room and has no internet access. If I do want to turn it into an ftp server, will it need it's own direct connection to the modem?

This one may require a bit too steep of a learning curve and it may be a bit overkill for your purpose, but I very highly recommend proftpd

Otheriwse I haven't used this daemon for anything serious, but eventually I'd like to move everything over to sftpd for the sake of security.
