How do I setup 2 modems and two phone lines to get a faster 'net connection?

I live in a rural area and can't connect faster than 24K with my internal modem.

I also have an external modem where I connect at about 28k.

I've read/heard about using two modems with two phone lines to achieve faster connections.

Is there anyway I can do this with the two modems that I have.

I dont know how to set it up, im sure someone here does, but one thing is true, your ISP must support it, so you should find that out first.

You're ISP has to support/allow such things. To the best of my knowledge, there is no shotgun-type hardware that works without support on the isp end.

Yes, set up both of them in windows. Create a DUN connection for your ISP, then go to one of the properties pages and set up multilinking.

waren is right, mulitilinking, i remember trying it, but i only had netzero at the time so it wasnt possible, i set up multilinking and when it established the 1st connection it would make the 2nd phone connect.

You dont need two accounts. The two modem calls are bonded via multilink PPP. This is the same method that is used to bond 2 ISDN channels. Your ISP has to support it. If they support 128k ISDN it *may* work. I depends on what equipment they use and how they have it set up. Just set it up and give it a try. Like Warrenton said, set up a new DUN, and click the mulilink tab. From there use the additional devices. Add in your other modem and phone number.

I've done it before using windows 2000 and a couple of internal sportsters with my old bx board. *weep* I got rid of the beloved internal sportsters for some piece diamond supra as I have no ISA slots on the Asus A7V. With the ISA sportsters I was able to nail speeds of 101.3k(50666x2).. It really works well when they are properly linked up. You need it supported by the ISP and you just dial in with the same account twice. Windows 2000 has a really simple multilink setup. I just dont do any downloading at home anymore (download at work, burn, bring home). I'm waiting for dsl/cable so I dont have to deal with modem garbage. Also considering the price (in my area, $29.95 for the multiplexed internet connection, $20 a month per phone line = $69.95) it's really not worth it. Cable is cheaper ($39 when it will be available) and depending on what level of DSL you get, it can be cheaper as well. Lets not even talk about price/performance.

midpoint is what i have used... work with w2k. not really multilink, but it does let you get use out of two modems and two phone lines.

I just found that my ISP no longer supports multilinking (they decided to put their resources into DSL).

Does anyone know if any free ISPs offer multilinking?

P.S. Is it possible to dial into two different ISP accounts (from the same PC) and open up two browsers? (basically, two separate connections). I have a dual-head monitor card so I could have a browser open in each monitor.

As icculus said, dual 56k is not economical compared to cable and DSL, because you have to pay for a second residential phone line and a second ISP account. Unless you don't have broadband in your area, avoid dual 56k.

NO free isps DO NOT support multilinking or activiating 2 accounts at 1 time. The reason is because they have to save enough bandwith for each free isp customer, also for the paying isp customers (since free isps share servers with paid isp servers).

You cannot dial into a free isp twice even if you have 2 different accounts, 2 different modems and 2 different monitors. This is because you are still running the free isp program off of 1 computer (so it's running on 1 registry). Altavista and the other free isps put a block on opening up multiple isp windows.

If you are a gamer, the multilink bonding of modems is actually very harmful to your online gaming ping. Say you get 200 ping to a server. Adding another link will double the ping (since it's 2 modems) up to 400ms. Unfortunatly, games and other apps are only able to use only 1 modem to upload, not both.

It is not possible to do that. Your PPP adapter can only deal with ONE IP at a time. (As far as I know, prove me wrong) .. Also, it would definitely not work as a multilink. The ISP needs to combine your channels. While it might be possible to make 2 dialup connection for routing purposes.. you would be using only one IP to do your web browsing and thus, only one connection.
