How do I set up RAID for my hard-drives?

Ok, so since setting up windows vista ultimate on my raptor, I've basically figured out I can now install no more than 2-3 games at a time on my HD because of disk space issues. I was recomended to set up my other HD, a 160 Seagate barracuda that doesn't have much on it in a RAID (I believe RAID 0) is sequence with my raptor. How would I go along doing this? Is it possible to not have to wipe anything out and just RAID the two drives together to give my raptor more storage? What risks are involved? Thank you in advance!

This is not a Highly Technical question.

You normally cannot build a RAID0 nondestructively. You would need to backup to some external media and then restore onto the array. I would not recommend this for normal desktop use; the performance gains are generally minor.

If you are concerned about reliability, you should use one drive for backups of the other, and not run them as RAID at all.

RAID 0 on unmatched disks? It can be done, but what's the point? If I were you, I'd just install my games on the second hard drive...

That would be a terrible move, pairing a different sized 10 00rpm HDD with a 7200rpm HDD. If you do that then your transfers will only be as fast as the slowest drive in the array (ie: the 7200rpm drive), meaning that your raptor would be wasted. Also, on a 74gb HDD (ie: the raptor), you should be able to comfortably have windows, 5-10 games, and plenty of applications all installed without having disk space issues. Even if the vista ultimate install took 20 GB (which it doesn't) you would still have 45GB or so for games and applications. You should use the 160gb drive for data\document storage, and you could put the page file and applications that you use less often (ie: ones that you don't need to load as fast) on it as well.

Here's my 2 cents.....

Leave your OS on the 74 gig raptor. Buy (2) Western Digital WD250KS 250 gig SATAII drives for about $90 each or less after rebates and set then up as a Raid 0 (Stripe) using your Raid setup utility for your board/card/Vista.

Uninstall/reinstall all programs to the newly created array and enjoy your space and speed!
