I know, it seems like a really silly question to alot of people here. But I have two VERY large files I want to share with my brother. Just to appease you curiosity, they are two cd Image files containg Linux Mandrake 7.1. Obviously these are too big to zip and try to e-mail, so the only way for me to pull this off is FTP. Alas, I haven't any really good tutorials on the net on how to set this up, but I know that it can't be that hard.

PS. if I can get this set up, I'll post out my IP for anyone here who might want these image files too. ;)

Do you have a static IP addy?

You need to set up an FTP server like Xitami or even Personal Web Server (found on the Windows CD). Personally I'd recommend Xitami over PWS (it is much faster and stabler). Xitami is just about as easy to set up as PWS, and gives you more control over FTP permissions, etc. Both Xitami and PWS are HTTP and FTP servers, so you could host your own web site too.

actually, the easiest software to use is probably ServU. 1 min and you are good to go.

i dont know about the other program, but for servu, i think you just go to tools (or options), and set up username, password, where would the user directory be, etc... it took me a few mins to figure everything out the first time i used it, so it shouldn't be hard

WarFTP, Xitami and ServU are all free FTP servers (not 100% sure about Xitami, but War and Serv are defaintely free) you set up that and give download privelages (ServU is the easiest to set up) and then he gets an FTP client CuteFTP, BPFTP, even Windows command line FTP.exe and connects to your server and downloads.

Use ServU, it's the least feature and easiest, but just for a one time thing like this it's more than enough, just check out the menus it's not that hard to set up.

Cool. I think I've got it. I added the two Linux CD Image Files for free downloads. They're quite big, but if anyone wants them, not to mention it would verify that I set this up correct,PM me and I'll set you up a user ID and password.

If you want to break your image files up into smaller "chunks" to make them easier to download/easier on your machine in regards to memory, or in case you have to shut down the server so that people don't lose the whole download, you can use winrar.
It's very simple, just add it to a .rar file, and then tell winrar you want to set it up into a sizeable download library, (it'll ask you what size you want to make them) e.g. you can make an image file into several 100 meg files, or smaller. This also decreases the size of the file by compressing the image.
