how do i set up a server?

ok, i have a DSL modem which can handle only 2 MAC addresses at a time. i now have three computers that i want to have access to it. i have a spare machine(K6 233) which i can use as the server, but i don't know what kind of software i will need. the program that the modem uses(it's external and at the moment i have 2 computers connected to it on a Linksys 10/100 switch) is called Access Manager. if anyone has any tips/ideas i'd greatly appreciate it 🙂

You can put 2 NICs in the server and setup Internet Connection Sharing in Win98 or 2000 or you can go with a Unix/Linux box.

Depending on how little you want to do / learn, you might consider some of the floppy disk based nat / firewalls. FreeSCO and PicoBSD come to mind.

Linux IPMASQ would be my suggestion, works great for me, and its been up and running for a year and a half without a glitch.

here's the software i have(when it comes ot OS's):
Win98SE
some TurboLinux Server Lite that came with my linksys switch

btw, i don't know the first thing about linux 😛

Pop in two network cards into your server and just use the ICS built into windows98 se. It works just fine.

Don't you need NAT32? Or is that included in the Internet Sharing that comes with Win2K?

ICS is Internet Connection Sharing which is included in win2k.

ICS is included in Win98 SE, WinME, and Win2K and you don't need any NAT software. Put two NIC's in one machine to serve you are done. Or you can buy a broaband router from Linksys, Netgear, or whoever.
