How Do I set up a new HDD with XP Pro

OK I'm going to upgraid From 1 40gig HDD to 1 80gig HDD
How do I move ALL that is on the 40gig to the 80gig
I'm running XP pro
I have open IDE's

Its going to be impossible to switch to a new hard drive without reinstalling windows...if I were you, I'd make the new hard drive secondary master. XP automatically detects hard drives (which is the good part) but if you wanted to make the 80 gig the only hard drive, you would have to copy all of your files to another computer, take out the new hard drive, put in the new, install windows, then move all the files back.

you could use Norton's Ghost 2002 or another program called Drive Image....so it's not impossible.

it is entirely possible to switch hard drives in windows 2000 and xp without reinstalling windows...
I've done it a few times, it's just a little tricky

1. add your new drive as a slave or on another channel
2. boot from your old drive as usual
3. partition and format your new drive
4. from control panel->administrative tools->computer management->disk management, remove the drive letter for your new drive
5. restart, and boot from a boot disk and use your favorite hard drive duplication software to copy everything from your old drive to your new drive (I used norton ghost)
6. pull out your old drive and move the new drive to the primary master
windows should boot up fine from your new drive

I've done it a couple of times, and I've had no problems.. I might have forgotten a step, everytime I've done it, it took me a few tries to remember what I did the previous time to get it to work properly.. 😱

I have allways used PowerQuest's Drive Copy. It's not that expensive, very intuitive and easy to use, quick and reliable. Saves a lot of headache and time.

I tried Norton Ghost 2002 because I was in a similar situation where I had to switch hard drives and it worked great for me. Thanks for making me aware of the ghosting programs...they sure do save a lot of time.
