Ok here goes..i have 2 computers, one has cable internet so i have a PCI ethernet and a external cable modem. The other computer just has 56K medom in it. They are about 40 feet apart in the room. My cable ISP only gives me 1 IP so theres nothing i can do about that. All i want to know is what do i need to set a network up between the two computers so i can use the interent on both PC's and what software i may have to use like wingate or whatever..Thanks everyone in advance for responding..

Oh yea i forgot to add im using WIndows 98 1st edition on both PC's ..will that be a problem cause ill upgrade if it is..??

I like sygate beter then wingate it easyer to setup. If you plan to have more then two computer running someday I would go with a hub then a crossover cable you can also go with a router but it will cost you more .

have two nics in the computer that will have the cable connection
if you're not planning to get another computer, then get a 40 feet crossover cable and attach the two computers together with it. run sygate, wingate (whatevers), and blam, done.

I would upgrade the machine that is connected to the cable modem to win98se. That way you can run internet connection sharing which is more stable than any other nat32 program that you can run.

Umm, Win98's internet connection sharing is garbage.

Sygate is your best bet. (besides getting a router)

What is it that Sygate can do that Windows ICS can't? Apparently windows ICS drops some packets which results in users on ICQ within the LAN to go on and offline all the time. Any other things I should be aware of?

Sygate verson 4.0 only has to have one nic card install to work if you are useing a hub . Windows ICS need two nic card and Sygate works with PPPoE and it easy to install and get it working.

I use ICS in win2k and it works just fine. Never any problems and ICQ never drops out. It works better then my Netgear router. One example being that when connected to the Netgear router, gamespy takes forever to refresh and when it is refreshing, none of the other systems can use the internet. When using Windows ICS I can refresh 2 gamespy's and still surf the web on a third system. I found that sygate and wingate to be POS software that is hard to get rid of. I use a linux floppy router now.
