How do I set the default boot sound level on a laptop in linux KDE

Ok, I've got Mandrake 8.1 running in a dual boot on my compaq presario 1201z laptop. Everytime I enter the KDE desktop the sound level turned up pretty high. So I turn it down, but the next time I reboot, the sound level is back up.

So how do I set the sound to start at off, or atleast remember where I was last (at a way lower level)?

I would like to be able to turn it on in class and not have anybody know, but that doesn't work if the sound is up...
