How do I save Realaudio or mp3 streaming files to disk

I hear history lectures off the net.

How can I save to disk these lectures rather than listening off the net ?
I go to a site, I find the archives, I then select a past lecture, and then real player begins.

I used to be able to go to a site, and rather than www.?????.com.....I could type in ftp.????.com and it would give me a list of the same files to "download" These real audio files would be 6MB in size. A two hour lecture.

What would happen if I connected the speaker jack to the mic jack and used an app to save the streaming file?
I know wav files can be huge.
These lecture are 20 minutes in lenght

I have a laptop windows xp with a 20 gig HD 512 ram

thanks all

I sue SoundForge 6 to record the 64K WMA streams off Digitally Imported.com into a .wav file. However, this program is overkill for that and I suggest you look into a program called Cool Edit 2000. :)

With WinAmp streamed mp3s can be saved using the diskwriter output plugin.

-In order to avoid duplication, streaming may be the only method available to hear some files lately.

"I go to a site, I find the archives, I then select a past lecture, and then real player begins."

-You may be able to right click the lecture and save target as / save as or some variation thereof and bypass real player(the worst, most invasive audio app in existence)

"I used to be able to go to a site, and rather than www.?????.com.....I could type in ftp.????.com and it would give me a list of the same files to "download" These real audio files would be 6MB in size. A two hour lecture."

-the ftp.yadayada should be the same as the www.yadayada. Alot of sites are eliminating anonymous users from accessing the ftp (file transfer protocol) access.

-When you are playing a mp3, or wav file, you are using the wav channel of your mixer.

-You can record any playable media on your computer to your computer without mic or speaker or cable, but

I WOULD SAY FIRST THOUGH, THAT THE ONLY REASON TO RECORD A WAV FROM THE WAV CHANNEL IS BECAUSE YOU ARE DEALING WITH A NON "COPYABLE" MEDIA. OBVIOUSLY IF THE FILE CAN BE DOWNLOADED YOU CAN DEAL WITH IT AS IS.

BUT IF NOT - TRY THIS

(To see your mixer, double click the speaker icon in your systray(lowest right hand corner of screen) If the speaker is not visible (xp), goto the control panel / sounds / and enable it's view. )

-to record from the wav channel of your mixer, goto options/properties and select record. this will show you all channels possible to record from. Select wav and then goto your sound recorder and record a small test wav to make sure you can hear what you recorded.

-finally to record a long wav file of a lecture, goto the sound recorder, and adjust the properties of the record down to a low quality(low quality = low size) and record the downloaded file. Should work for this application, but if quality is important record a segment, and then convert to mp3. (audiocatalyst)
