How do I save messages in my outlook so that I still have them after a fresh install?

I'm going to be reinstalling my entire system over the weekend and I wanted to know how I can save the e-mails I currently have in my inbox so that I still have them after the fresh install.

Is there a way to save/restore them?

Thanks

Yes, there is a way. Do a google search on outlook + backup, or something similiar.

The method I've used involved saving a directory and then restoring it later. A website would be more detailed, so do the google search. :)

In depends what version of Windows you are running. There is a directory that would contain a load of dbx files that makeup your Outlook Express database (I am assuming it's outlook express). You Would backup the files in that directory and then restore them over the new database that is created when you run outlook express for the first time under the new install.

Do a search for "inbox.dbx" that will tell you where the files are. On windows 2000 these are in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your user name\Application Data\Identities\load of system generated numbers\Outloox Express\

no no no no no......you guys are making it way too difficult.....all u have to do is go to file>import and export>export to a file>then select files of type *.pst (personal folders file).....then select ur inbox or watever u want to backup......select ur location and filename......then.....after re-installing.....do the same thing but import it this time....very easy actually....that's wat it is meant to do

Another way that I use and recommend to everyone is to save the messages you want to keep as a text file. Click file, save as, name the email, and then save to a seperate partition.
The reasoning is, you do not save all your snail mail by bundling them up or putting into a file cabinet, do you?
You can also read them at any time or insert the information into any other document you want without having to use your mail program.
Just a thought,

Bill

Right didn't realise it's Outlook....in Outlook Express there is no easy way to do it, the export function only exports to other programs, it doesn't act as a backup.

If you save it as a .pst, it also backs up your contacts, calendar, tasks, etc. The other methods don't do that. :)

no it doesn't......you get to chose which folder to export.....just choose your inbox and that is all that it will backup...if you want to also back up your sent items or watever, just do them seperately

Umm...yes it does. Or are you saying that it doesn't by default?

you can tell outlook to save everything anyplace you want. why not just tell it to save everything to a different place ,example- other then c:\
..make a folder on another partion or your desktop, wherever.

go to tools\options\maintenance and browse to wherever. it's also great if your duel booting and tend to get your mail from both OS's.
have them save in the same place and you can get mail you saved under win98 while your in XP.
when you want to backup you stuff just save the folder.
good luck
