How do I roll my iPod touch back to a previous OS? IOS4 is killing my battery

I never used to have to think about battery life on my iPod, and now it's chewing through it in a couple of days. Lame as hell. This started when I installed iOS4. How do I roll back?

With a Touch you may be able to download the IPSW for your device, and hold Shift when you press Restore in iTunes. This should allow you to navigate to the IPSW and restore. Give some more info on your device (Model, GB's) and I may be able to offer some more advice.

Definitely depends on the model, both for battery length and rollback ability. Either way, a "couple of days" is awesome compared to my iPhone...:\

What the fuck is IPSW? It's a 32gb iPod Touch (newest model).

Maybe you just need to tweak some settings?
I haven't changed any settings. This fucking ios4 update makes me want to throw the damn device into a wall. On top of the battery issues I'm also getting fed up with constant Safari crashes and having to press my home button 3 times before the damn screen will turn on half of the time. The device is still under warranty, I might just return it.

You ever jailbreak your iTouch? If so, you know if you have SHSH's saved on file in Cydia? If not, you may be out of luck.

Edit: If you're interested here is a link..

I don't think you'll have to go through step 3 in the link (editing your hosts file..) but you may need to downgrade your version of iTunes to the one that came out with 3.1.3. There are download links to the IPSW files, and you should just be able to hold shift and click restore to choose it.

The device no longer works as advertised. That's grounds for a warranty return.

Again, I don't know if things are different in New Zealand, but a warranty return will probably only get you a replacement, not money.

You may not even get a replacement.

As the others have said, reverting to an older firmware isn't an option on your model of the iPod Touch since you can no longer get a signed version of the firmware from Apple.

The one thing I would suggest is to wipe the iPod and start anew. Apparently some people have had success that way - the working assumption is that old settings are screwing things up.

I agree here, i still have to wipe my iphone because it sucks the battery down like no ones business right now. All i did was an upgrade, i didnt backup -> wipe -> install new OS fresh -> restore from backup. Its just such a pain and my iphone4 should be here soon so im not really keen on doing it, will be easier to just wipe it for the next user.

I can't stand that. My boss says it all fucking day.

Yeah, i can't stand people calling it an iTouch, there is no such product. =p Quit being lazy and call it an iPod Touch, because thats what it is. Or just say "the Touch" or "my Touch" for short, but there is no such thing as an iTouch.

GA:

I've got the same model as you (3rd gen, 32GB Touch) and did a clean install of iOS4. Mine seems to be slightly faster overall and battery life is the same or better.
