How do I rip DVDs?

I have a couple of movies I'd like to put on my HD. I know it's possible, anand's written articles on it. How do I do it, and what's the necessary software? Is there freeware that does this?

DVDFab. Not free, but damn it's wonderful. Use DVDFab to rip to hd, and then VLC to play them. I'm in the process of ripping my entire DVD collection to my server now.
 
RipIt4Me would cover most of the other 5%.

I always start with it, which leads into DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. You can even configure it for a one-click process, and take out the manual intervention.
