How do I repair IE6 from XP recovery Console?

I have a Windows xp home computer that doesnt seem to want to play nice. Upon boot, it sits like its loading windows xp home, then reboots. I used ERD Commander to boot into it and saw almost 50 errors that say Event ID: 1000 Faulting application rundll32.exe. What I'd like to do is attempt to repair their Internet Explorer 6 from a Windows XP recovery console. Anyone know how to do this? I need to know the command to put in at the command prompt.

Thanks in advance,

This is the error I am getting on this box:

Source: Application error
Event Id: 1000

Description: Faulting application rundll32.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module wininet.dll, version 6.0.2900.2577, fault address 0x00077a65.

I take away from this that I need to replace the file wininet.dll. Anyone know how I would do this from the Windows Recovery Console?

It also appears that the error you're getting may be the result of having a corrupted user profile.

What I would do is log on in SAFE mode as the administrator. You will see that the Administrator account is there when you try logging on in Safe mode.

Once you're in Safe mode in the Administrator account, go to Control Panel. In Control Panel, click on User Accounts. Create a new account with the same privileges of your old account (either Computer administrator or limited).

Once you create the account (add a password to it if you want), exit out of Windows safe mode and log back in under the new account. If you get no error messages about wininet.dll, you can pretty safely assume your original account profile became corrupted.

You can then transfer your documents over to the new account's "My Documents" folder. Once you've got all that done, I would go ahead and delete the old account. You can then change the name of the new account to the same name as the old account, and you're golden.

I cannot log in via safe mode or regularly. When I attempt to boot into safe mode, the computer hangs on the agp driver, then reboots itself. Hence why I was asking for a fix I could possibly run from the Windows XP recovery console. The ONLY way I can boot into this windows partition, is to boot through ERD Commander.

Have you tried the "Safe mode with command prompt" option? This should avoid the video issue (or at least has a shot at doing it). So again, when you're looking at the Safe Mode menu, choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Now, IF that works, here's a way to use "System Restore" with Safe Mode with Command Prompt. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

If you are talking internet explorer 6---I would attempt to resolve the error and then update that to ie7---which is more secure---ie6 is just a giant security hole.

Your other option is to boot from your cd rom drive using your original windows install disk---and do a repair install.

Lemon Law has a good solution. Download and install IE7. That should fix the problem.

Of course, you can always do a "Repair Install" of XP. It SHOULD work without requiring re-install of your programs and without data loss. It requires booting from the XP Install CD. As always, I'd recommend having backups of any important data files.

I just looked at the ERD Commander user guide. You can apply System Restore points directly from ERD commander, so why not go that route? Read the guide/manual on how to utilize System Restore from ERD Commander. Please don't say you disabled System Restore...

since you cant boot even into safe mode, other than trying a "repair" install (which i think is best in this case if the files are actually corrupted), using ERD Commander for doing a system restore sounds really cool, another thing you can also try is restoring the registry to the date windows was first booted on that pc, if registry corruption may be the problem preventing boot up..

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

if it boots up with that registry, you can then you want to access the C:\System Volume Information\_restore which has all the files system restore would have under different RP###, using the newest dated, or rear newest, RP### folder, then under snapshot, you will see your registry files. get the ones dated before the problem occured and then use those files to copy back to c:\windows\system32\config in the same way you did with the registry files from day1's boot under the windows\repair. maybe that will get your pc running?

Looks like they had the system restore function disabled. So I am taking this to mean the only way to get this up and running is booting into a repair option from their Windows xp disk.

Gonna give this a try.
