How do I repair a corrupt NT kernel?

Over the last month CS (and any other HL mod) has been crashing all the time. I can rarely play anything for more than 15min before it crashes. I've re-installed HL (and all the mods) with no effect. My computer is also becoming increasingly unstable in everything else as well.

Over the last week I've had two BSODs where there was an error in "ntoskernel.exe". Does this mean that the kernel is corrupt? If so is there a way to repair it without formatting? If I have to formatt it's no big deal cause I've got everything backed up but I'd rather not if I don't have to. Thanks.

P.S. I tried my Win2K boot disks but all it said was "maintenance has been done on your system". It didn't say what (if anything) was wrong.

Maybe try going back to older video drivers. Did this stuff seem to start around the time you moved to the Det 23.11's?
I know several people who have had issues after moving to the 23.11 version, and went back to 21.xx.

Personally, the 21.xx drivers were crap on my system, causing bsod's left and right. I went back to the 12.41 release to be able to play for more than an hour at a time without crashing and to be able to shut down/restart without the system freezing after playing DAoC.
Once the 23.11's came out I installed them, and the system's been rock-stable, but not everyone seems to have the same experience.

Try and create a repair disk, and repair your Win2k install. After that, patch your OS with the latest updates from Windows Update website. You may need to re-install some patches that the updater already considers you have it installed (ie: SP2, and all other fixes after it.). Then uninstall your Nvidia drivers, and install the latest Nvidia drivers for Win2k.

I've created a repair disk. Now this may seem like a dumb question but, how do I use the repair disk to fix the problem? I've never actually tried this before. Thanks.

Isn't it too late to try the repair disk now? Since the disk should be created "backed up" when the system is still healthy.

That's a good point. I hadn't thought about that. Using the disk I just made probably wouldn't fix anything since it's just a backup of unhealthy data.

For future reference though, how do I use the disk to fix problems?

In w2k. Under Accessories there should be a backup/restore program. Run that and there is an option in there to create a rescue disk, do that.

Then when you need to use it boot the machine with the boot CD and choose a Repair option in the blue screed. Then insert your rescue disk when prompted.
