How do I remove the thermal 'putty' type stuff that came on the bottom of a heatsink?

Just scrap it off with a knife, then if the base isnt smooth or has machining marks sand it off and then rub it down with rubbing alcohol.

listen to this cuz its the RIGHT way to do it.

1st: use GOOF OFF solvent to get the crap off. its strong stuff so u don't need to scrub at it just use q-tips
2nd: use acetone after with q-tips as a finishing cleaner.

thats it.

Don't scrape at it with a knife...its not too hard to put scratches in the base of your HSF. Just use some nail polish remover and q-tips, or just good old dish soap and water.

Ever get a credit card offer with a Faux CC in it? Or have an old ID lying around. They work great at scraping that crap off, and won't hurt your HS. And as always, use Goof-Off, Acetone and then Isopropyl Alcohol to remove any residue.

if u use GOOF OFF then u don't need to scrape SH!T

GOOF OFF will melt wutever u need it to. then just scoop up the goo with a q-tip or wutever

Thing is.. well I finally got it off.. started with a knife.. and I noticed I scratched it a little bit.. so quit hehe.. used isopropyl alcohol which took a lot of effort.. but finally removed it can I just fill it in with some thermal compound.. 🙂
