you mean you are trying to take out the deck in a camry?

You will probably have to take off the whole front console to get the deck out...

thats exactly what im talking about. the problem is, i don't even know where to start in taking the whole console out. i've changed head units for about 3 cars successfully, but thats about it. so im not extremely experienced.

Well, you need a crowbar, but it has to be a metric one, not a SAE. ;)

If you don't order from Crutchfield, you could try doing what I've done countless times for small automotive jobs. Go to the service desk of you friendly local Toyota dealer, and ask the guy to punch up the diagram of the procedure on his computer. Most auto guys are friendly enough, and willing to share their knowledge if you approach them in the right way. They actually respect that you want to do the job yourself.

If that's a no go, just shasay around to the service bays (enter through the door that sternly proclaims "Employee's Only") and respectfully approach the most receptive mechanic you see, and ask.

OH, what a feeling! :D

I think I may have the diagram at home. I'll keep you updated. '01 is very similar to 97, right? I'm not 100% sure.
