How do I remove the anti-reflective coating on my CRT monitor?

You can't really. It's a really thick coating. Not something that you can wipe off easily with Windex. My dad's 19" NEC monitor became badly scratched too. It always makes a horrible zap noise when he turns it on. How did you scratch yours?

The process of correcting this would be much more difficult than buying a new monitor. You'd have to use special steel wools to smooth out the surface and then use polishes on the glass.

It really isn't worth it.

Yea... jsut get another 19" Dell CRT for 25 bucks. Check Craigslist.

I did this to a Apple Studio Display CRT (with ADC connector for the G4 cube I had) a year ago. Picked up the monitor locally, and I had the monitor facing the back of the front passenger seat and on the drive home, it rubbed about 15% of the glare coating off in jagged lines and patterns. I spent about 2-3 hours with windex trying to remove all the coating and MAYBE got to about 45% removed. Throw that sucker away.

I read on another site that oven cleaner will remove the coating. Is it worth a try?

Someone in GH suggested Ammonia
(i never tried it, FWIW - mine has tiny scratches - unnoticeable except at the right angle)

It will most likely work. But be very careful when handling this stuff as it's extremely strong base and will eat through your skin like nothing. Make sure to wear heavy duty rubber gloves when handling oven cleaner.

i imagine it can't be too good for the monitor's plastic parts.

if you wan't something "strong" try muriatic acid.

LoL, I have the ultimate scratch I challenge everyone to beat my method of scratching!

Before I bought this current CRT (samsung syncmaster 700nf), I had an old Acer. I was practicing with my Katana in my bedroom, which is cramped for space. I guess you can see where this is going. Razor sharp katana vs Acer monitor.

Luckily it didn't break the screen. But from then on, I had a cool story (or not so cool) to tell when everyone asked about the gash
