How do I re-install windows without deleteing data?

A Repair Install of XP will keep all your Documents and Programs. Unless the Repair goes badly, of course.....

I recommend maintaining ongoing backups of important data. And just before a Repair Install would be a great time to make another data backup.

Remember, it is the Repair Installation and NOT the Repair through Recovery Console. Yes, it will keep your data and program just like before. The only thing you will lose is the MS Upgrades and of course, activation of XP.

I suppose that it's a minor item, but the only time that I did a repair installation on XP, it also lost all of my personal configuration settings. It is true that the updates disappearred from Add/Remove Programs, but when I returned to the update site, it seemed to see them anyway, and didn't offer them again. I never knew if they were really installed or not.

You don't lose XP activation with a repair install(at least I didn't). You do have to enter your product key. I just did one this evening. If you have any non certified drivers allow install to remove them if it asks. I tried keeping my video drivers that were not certified and the computer would not boot into windows. It would go the the XP logo-loading windows screen then black screen and reboot. Would boot into safe mode. uninstalled the drivers via the control panel add remove programs. Rebooted and worked fine.
