How do I put up drapes in my apartment?

I've had some drapes up in my apartment for about a year but they've been slowly coming out of the wall. Tonight a dumb friend pulled the brackets all the way out of the way after I warned him to be careful. My lease states that I can't put anything into the wooden window frames either. I had just used those plastic expanding things in the drywall to support the 2 brackets, but they apparently are not suited to the job. What should I be using to hold up the drapery brackets? 🙂
Thanks!

toggle bolts, 1/4" should work fine, or get some wood screws and hit the studs with em

ez-anchors might work also, but i'd go with toggles
