How do I put together a cpu and a fan?

Can anyone help me? Last time I bought a mobo/cpu/fan, everything came put together and I didn't do a thing. Now I bought a mobo/cpu/fan for a friend, and the fan isn't connected. How do I do this? The components are as follows: MSI K7T Pro, Globalwin Fan with heatsink, and a Duron. Anyone know of a site with pics that can show everything I need to do? Also, the "Read Me" card that came with the mobo says I need to use thermal grease between the heatsink and cpu. My question is what is thermal grease and where can I get some?

Please help me.

thermal grease is a heat transfer agent that allows heat to dissipate off the cpu to the heatsink more efficiently, Careful when attaching the Heatsink to your Duron, word is that Durons Crack easily when mounting heatsinks on it. anyways its pretty simple. put a thin layer of heatsink paste/compound/grease on the sink itself and the cpu core. and then lay the heatsink onto the processor and clip it securely to the socket clip catcher. you can get grease ust about anywhere nowadays, radio shack carries it, the better stuff..artic silver can be found at www.plycon.com www.2coolpc.com to name a few

Mday - I don't exactly consider myself a newbie, considering that the system in my sig was put together by moi. Well, except for the cpu/heatsink/fan.

prontospyder - Not really. There are no major or minor computer stores near me. If I really wanted to, I could probably find one in the city, but lugging the mobo there is too much of a hassle especially on public transportation.

Electric Amish - Are you holding back on us? :)

Appreciate your bumps, but is there anyone that can provide more info? I bought the thermal grease, Artic Silver, from 2CoolTek this morning. So once that comes in, I'll be attempting this procedure. If anyone can offer any more advise or better yet pics, feel free.

Check out jonnyguru's site. He has a little tutorial on socketAfans. Here it is.

I installed a GlobalWin Fop38 and had zero troubles and I followed his instructions. It isn't hard unless you make it hard.

hubbs - Thanks for the link. It definately helped me.

Okay, it's done. Or at least I think so. I put some Artic Silver on the bottom of the heatsink and on top of the Duron. Although, when it came to putting the silver on the cpu, it got a little sloppy. The top of a Duron isn't exactly smooth... Nevertheless, the heatsink is now clipped onto the cpu. However, I do have a question. The bottom of the heatsink was the size of the cpu plus an indentation. Does that indentation go over the socket rise? To better explain, you have the socket on the mobo which has a place for the Duron then a rise. Does that rise go into the indentation on the bottom of the heatsink? Because that's the way I placed the heatsink on top of the cpu. Seems to me that's the way it should be. Anyone care to clarify?

Yes, that's right. The profile of the bottom of the heatsink should match the profile of the CPU socket with the processor on it. Once you get it lined up properly you need to attach the heatsink on to the socket. The whole thing should all fit tightly together. You'll soon find out if you've got it right if your CPU overheats and melts when you turn on the computer :). Make sure you connect the fan - there should be a three pin connector near the CPU socket (either brown or white - it should be labelled FAN1 (or something like that)) - look in your mobo manual for information on this.

timco - Thanks for the info. I would think that the cpu and the heatsink are making plans for a family right about now. They couldn't possibly get any tighter after locking down that heatsink. Damn that was hard!

Now the real test remains. Will it work? Unfortunatly the moment of truth won't come until Monday, since I'm still waiting on the graphics card. I just hope that when I turn on the system for the first time, no melting will occur. Wish me luck!
