A friend of mine lost their garage door opener, and got a programmable remote from a hardware store.

Their opener is quite old. There's no automatic reprogram button available. Attached to the main chassis is a small box with an antennae labelled "CODE: ###-##"

where ###-## is a numeric code.

Is there a standard method for translating this code into a binary format that I can input into the remote's bank of switches?

It's an Overhead brand garage door opener. Not sure of year or model, but if it's original to the house it'd be mid to late 70s

Look for DIP switches on the opener like on the remote. Set them the same.

If it's that old, I agree. There SHOULD be model numbers on the opener somewhere. On my Chamberlain, they're under the light covers.

If ideas above do not work; get a specialist to comes out and setup you up.

My house came with an opener and no remotes.
The seller (flipper) provided generic remotes in still in plastic wrap from HD.
After 2-3 hrs following directions and talking to manufacturer, I called a service.
$200 got a wireless for outside, two remotes and everything working. Well worth it. Then returned the remotes to HD for $60.

Tell her that if the garage door isn't open when the car reaches the top of the driveway that you'll leave her there in the rain.

I'd recommend replacing the opener with a new (much quieter + with battery backup) belt drive Chamberlain opener. Lowes or Sears often has them on sale for around $200, for the 3/4 horsepower version.
And: something that old probably doesn't include the same safety sensors as what the modern openers have.
