Sometimes, a mpg/avi that I download will open a url while playing. I find that to be quite annoying. Is there anything I can do about it?

Hah... nah. Actually, some guy recorded all these anime shows and put them on kazaa. But halfway through the episodes, IE pops up and I get to pay a little visit to his website... again.

These are avi and mpg files. Any clues on what to do?

There is no way an avi or mpg file can do that.

Link one of those files.

EDIT: I just saw you say that you are running Kazaa. That's what's causing the pop-ups.

no...it's very possible that his avis/mpegs are opening up a web link...it's happened to me. As for the solution: there is none...just be quick enough to close it.

lol, pr0n fo sho

it might just be an asf file renamed, i have a few of those...

if you open it in virtualdub and re-encode it it might go away

Haha, I swear it's not pr0n. Though a fix would be handy for pr0n as well!

I'm sure it's not kazaa because the site pops up even if I'm on kazaa, and it's always the same site.

Virtual-dub eh? I'll give that a shot!

if virtualdub doesn't fix it you might have to get medieval on it :D

goes like this:

1. rip the sound using Goldwave
2. open the vid in graphic/anim package and strip down to image sequence
3. reencode hte image sequence then splice in sound using virtualdub

result == 1 oppressed video (no url)

Yup, no go from virtualdub. Apparently these avi/mpg are merely renamed asf files. Should I try the above instructions still?

how about cutting out that exact part that cause it to open url.
say second no 51, cut that out and rejoin second 50 and 52.
you lost a second but still worth it. or maybe only half a sec.

It would have to abuse a media player bug to execute code. Otherwise any link info in there will either just be ignored, be processed as video/audio, or generate an error due to the fact that it is not video/audio.

It's like the antivirus companies claiming pictures can contain virusses. Sure they can, but nothing will happen unless it is executed by the viewing program, which won't happen normally as those programs don't expect code and won't do anything with it.

it's not executing code, it's just a "handy" function built in to the asf file format

I think microsoft's idea of handy and the general publics idea are completely different worlds. Yes this does happen. And it's probably a renamed extention. I saw programs out there that are trying to just stript this code out as we speak. If I could find some links, I'll post em. (It's still early, give me a break.) Search for 'ASX URL opener' OR, you could use a player that doesn't support that function. And I believe a sweet little program called Sasami2k will do the trick. This program is SUPER small and slick as hell. I highly recommend this over WMP. And as a bonus, it has alpha fading!!

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Virtualdub, apparently, cannot open these file formats (using windows xp). It seems the ability to open asf files was intentionally removed.

After some research, it seems that microsoft used to have a kit called "media resource kit", which contained an "advance script indexer" which allows you to add/remove scripts (such as opening a url) in an asf file. Unfortunately, that program is no longer available! Bah!

Mplayer2 also opens the url (which I found out while trying to type this message, darn it!)

As a temp solution, you could add his site URL to your hosts file. That way, if you are hammered with popups upon loading his page, that won't happen. You'll still have the window pop up, but it'll just be a 404 page.

On an unrelated note, I've added some major ad servers to my hosts file (and x10.com), and its made my browsing experience much nicer :)

But not into mpeg/avi, which he claims.

file format is not the same as extention

i doubt the file is actually an mpeg, just renamed to something like "pr0n.mpg"
