Windows machine, had all music on network drive (Y:), copied all music files to ext hd (J:).

I don't let iTunes manage my music, I add them to the library by hand. (Drag and drop the files from explorer into iTunes.

1. map the drive with the same letter name (y:) and you should be set.

The key when restoring is to have backed-up the my itunes folder withing my documents > my Music> and to kkeep any external music sources the same, such as in this case.

New location is actually J:\music so I can't do that. :( I'm trying out this method here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~smulleke/2004/06/10/index.html#post200406101029 it's old, but I'll see if it works.

I know what you're saying. I'm saying my old path to my music was Y:\ (that drive was dedicated to all music). The new path is J:\MUSIC (external HD that will store more than music).

So far the method I used is good, I think it kept all the album art and all my playcounts/last played. The only bad part was the XML doesn't store like Date Added so I can't tell my most recent music. Oh well.
