How do I make WinXP not display the "network cable is unplugged" icon in the system tray?

It's a laptop. I'm fully aware it's not plugged into a network cable, I don't need the system tray to tell me that. What do I do to disable that?

View your network connections.... right click on the one you want to edit. You will find a small checkbox asking you if you want to see the connection status in the tray... uncheck it... hit apply.... done.

You mean the box that says "Show icon in notification area when connected"?

The same box that does absolutely nothing when it's not connected?

How often, if ever, do you use that NIC?

If never or very rarely, just disable the NIC.

That is EXACTLY what the person 2 posts above you said.

Any my post directly above yours is saying that it works only when the connection is connected.

Yes, but your nick is confusing people. :p

Aside from actually disabling the card/port in your hardware profiles, I'm not aware of a way to do what you're looking for.

Yep, I think you have to disable the NIC in the device manager.

I will mention one additional way, the "proper" way, if you will, but it depends on the NIC driver support. Some of them have an option under "Advanced" for something like "Cable detection". If you set this to "disabled", then the driver will not be able to report to Windows when the cable is connected or disconnected.

But if you are not going to use that NIC at all, then yes, it's probably simplest to just Disable it altogether in the Device Manager.
