It takes for ever for my computer to bootup, and then another eternity for windows 2000 to fully start everything. How would I go about getting this thing to boot faster?
Specs:
Windows 2000 Pro
1.4Ghz Athlon
Epox EP-8KHA+
512Megs DDR PC2100
60Gig 5400RPM harddrive
vistiontek Geforce 3 Ti200
nic
SB Live x-gamer
Pinnacle studio pro capture card

What can I do to get this thing to boot and load windows faster???

Thank you for any help.

Don't turn it off :).
How long is an eternity? I have a P3-450 with 384 RAM and it takes about one minute to get into my desktop in win2k...

A 5400RPM drive isn't a particular screamer for transfer rates. Also the NIC searching for an address will slow you down.

With just a glance at what you have, a 7200RPM drive would do wonders, as would assigning an IP to your system.

Hmm, it took about 1minute and 40seconds for my computer to boot and load windows. I don't have a ton of stuff loaded to start on startup but here is what I do have:
Remote control software
msn messenger
zone alarm
pccillain
realplayer---can't seem to get this one out of startup.

I wish I had the cash to upgrade to a faster harddrive that is still 60Gigs, the only reason I am not still using my 8.4Gig 5400 harddrive is because of the thanksgiving day sales.

I don't know much about assigning an IP address to my nic, I am connected to the internet through a cable modem, which plugs into the uplink port on the hub, and my computer into the hub.

1 minute 40 seconds doesn't seem too bad...I just built a Win2K Pro system and mine takes 1 minute 30 seconds from the time I hit the power switch to when I can actually start using my system (I have many things starting up automatically, ZoneAlarm, NAV, BOClean, PopUp Killer, etc.). This is on an Asus P4T-E/P4-1.9/512 MB RDRAM/IBM 46 GB 7200 RPM system.

Personally, I'll trade a few seconds of bootup time for the EXTREME STABILITY that Win2K has provided me thus far (my Win98SE machines are also rock solid but nothing like Win2K!).

It's my understanding that WinMe is the boot up champ, even faster than XP...

Wow, 15seconds to boot??? Still not a good enough reason to go back to WinME. I had it on my computer for a little over an hour before I reformatted and loaded 2000.
So it sounds like win2000 just takes a little longer to bootup, that is fine I guess because I am sticking with 2000 on this machine because of the stabilty.

Thanks for the insight.

I have ME running on C drive, 2k on D Drive and XP on E Drive. ME takes 12 seconds, 2k is 58 seconds and XP is 20 seconds. :D

Win2k boot time increases a butt-load with a NIC installed, especially if you are actually using it on a network or broadband router. XP seems to cure this, but I don't see that as a reason to upgrade. When I was running 2k reboots did not happen often anyway.

You could go back to Win9x, it would boot faster but you would have to do it more often.

You must have used a pretty crappy network. ;) I have my comp at home which is on a home network with only two comps and no hub/switch/router, and I have specific IP addresses set. It boots up pretty damn quick, using Win2K Pro. I'm at my cousin's with my box. He has a router and 3 comps. I hooked it up, set my IP/DNS to "automatic", and it takes the same amount of time to boot up.

Are you running dhcp by any chance, if so its cause it has to get an ip and dns info from the router every time you boot, I keep my pcs on static ips behind the router.
