only certain dvd players can do that. go to videohelp.com and see if yours is compatible with .avi files

You can either:
1. Get DIVX or XVID type codecs that will let you play your .avi files on dvd.
or
2. Get a program like avi2dvd that will turn your .avi files into a dvd format.

Regards...

A third option though, use Nero/Roxio to do straight VCDs, not DVD quality, but okay if you don't care, they use standard CDs, but will play in most DVD players, and it doesn't take special software, should be built in to the basic burning stuff.

I personally went to Walmart and got a Phillips DVP-642 DVD Player, that supports Divx playback, so I just burn everything as data on DVDs now, and it plays them back good as ever.

Philips DVP642 is one of the most popular ones that can do this easily. Can be found for around $50. But some random people report it dying after 6 months or so so be sure to get some sort of extra warranty if you get it. I got one a month or so ago and it works fine.

Oh, you can also change the region code to 0, so you can play whatever you want from anywhere in the world :)...bonus!

I asked about this once and was told a modded XBOX can play anything... easily the best $75 I've ever spent... modding my xbox. It can also stream from your PC --> XBOX --> regular tv.

It may be a good option for you if you have a lot of files and don't want to convert/burn them every time.

People post TV/DVD/HT threads all the time in OT. This relates to Playing videos on a DVD player. I don't see the big issue.

Where should it go?

Video? Software? General Hardware? Peripherals?

I have this player, but it is still sitting in the box in the closet. I just can't get rid of my trusty Apex AD600. I have the S-video out from my video card connected to my TV in the other room, and I watch vids that way.

Some people have mentioned encoding the AVI as either VCD or DVD, but nobody has yet mentioned encoding it as an SVCD. Not all DVD players will play an SVCD, but if you have such a player, the video quality is much much much better than a regular VCD.

Go to www.videohelp.com for details.

P.S. Ok, this is very strange. If you click on the link, it takes you to some strange website advertising site. You have to manually enter the url in the address bar to get to the cd freaks website.

Possibly because you put FEAKS, not FREAKS in it?

Nope. A friend of mine tried playing a VCD I made on his PS2 and it didn't play while it played fine on my DVD player.
