How do I make a website?

Hey guys never actually did this. My friend asked me to make a website for her small business. Can someone outline the steps needed to setup a website? Can someone explain to me the concept of domain and hosting and recommend a good company that provides these services?

Also, how can I make a placeholder that says coming soon with some basic info like a location and contact number for her? What are the tools that are best suitable to a basic but beautiful website?

Thanks!

Search for tutorials, htmldog has a good one to learn html and the whole "coding" side of things. This is the easiest for the place holder since you would only have to load up a picture or display some basic text.

What most people are doing now is using wordpress or joomla witch are more like traditional programs were you select things you want to have on your page, and you only have to fill in the text, pictures and what not.
Again you can find tons of tutorials for setting up something like this, html knowledge will still come in handy if you want to change some things on the pre-made templates that these programs use.

lol if ever pics of friend were necessary it is now.

Guy with no knowledge of web design agrees to create a business website for her - girl is either HAWT or op is retarded - need pictures to confirm.

start with installing WordPress on your website wn computer and tinker with it. I am assuming you have some programming skills?

or sign up to a webhost that has wizards that build websites.

http://www.******** is probably the easiest but not the cheapest unless you have some basic HTML skills or are willing to learn. Hmmn it's a banned word, that sucks but it's expensive $24.99/mo.

Here's what I would do:
1) Register for http://www.webhostingtalk.com, read the rules, use the search feature and read A LOT. After you get a feel for the place, post some questions, make sure to specify your friends budget, what kind of business, where it's located (city/state), etc.
2) Register domain separately from the domain, NameCheap.com
3) Find and affordable and reputable web host such as StableHost.com which offers cPanel and other tools to help build your web site.
4) The easiest method to create a relatively simple web site is to use WordPress, google it.

Best of luck!

You don't know anything, yet still want to do it,... OK - read this; http://www.amazon.com/Building-Websi...es+for+dummies

Now, I am sure someone will be outraged over this suggestion - because they know better,.. but, you yourself don't. So, worry about best practices and the blowhards later, if you want to keep doing this.

So, learn the basics, tell your friend this is the 1st time you are doing this and then deliver the website.
