guys,
i'd like to get some help on making my own mail server. I'm on a cable connection with a static IP and have spare computer with windows 2000 server. It doesnt need to handle a lot of traffic cuz it is just my mail and a friends. currently it is being routed through my friends old workplace, but they are becoming unreliable. I'd like to have it in my house. what do i do to set it up?
thanks!

First, you need a mail server software.

What kind of server platform are you running ? If linux, sendmail is built in and there are tons of free mail server software out there.

If windows platform, you can run mail server such as Imail ... It is excellent and easy to use. Mailmax is good as well... I don't really know if there are free mail server software out there ... I am running exchange2k and it is serving me good 🙂

Have fun

Mercury/32 is an excellent completely FREE SMTP/POP3 server. I use it to run my own mail server on Windows 2000 Server. It was pretty easy to set up, except to make it run as a service you have to jump through a few hoops. At least they give you instructions on how to do it.
