how do i limit bandwidth?

with stock firmware most routers cant do QoS, which is what you want. youll have to get a router that will do it out of the box, a router supported by 3rd party firmware like tomato or dd-wrt, or software for the individual pc.

whats the problem?
 
i'll check out the netlimiter app, thanks jackmds.
cause i really dont want to buy a new router just for that.

just trying to deter kids from P2P..etc and hogging up my bandwidth
 
Isn't there a free QOS UI for Windows? I notice that XP / Vista (IIRC) have the QOS portion of the networking stack integrated into the OS according to the network information dialog.

Surely all that is needed is a GUI front end to manage the existing capabilities for basic uses?

seriously. set up some rules and if they dont obey them, instead of gimping their bandwidth, remove it. dont most p2p programs have a way to limit the bandwidth/connections/downloads anyway?

well i admit i'm no Dr. Phil, but typically on average kids do alot of things their not supposed to and parents never find out about, when i was a kid, rules only exist if i got caught lol.
like most adults i dont have time to monitor every keystroke they make and kids arent stupid with computers these days...they know how to increase the bandwidth on P2P clients if i try to restrict it. even parental controls are only to ease the mind for naive parents these days. all the info on google tells them any answer they want to bypass whatever.
i also likely would never know if they just popped in a windows cd and reinstalled it just to bypass whatever i put on it...so thats why i'd rather do it through router but i'm trying trial of this application and hope they wont realize what it is i guess ...lol


 
IMHO you need a software bandwidth limiter. Some applications don't have OPTIONS to limit the bandwidth they use, and if they don't have an effective option to do so you can't really blame your kids for not following the sharing guidelines.

For instance whenever I let my media center PC online it sucks up ALL the bandwidth available downloading olympics videos from NBC's thing... IIRC there IS no option (other than STOP) to get it to throttle its usage or share nicely.

Well. I would tell them not to do it, if they continued i would take the computer.


And if it did come to beating it wouldn't be a 2x4, it would be a 6foot length of Cat5.....you have to make the punishments relate to the issue. 🙂

And if in such a router you were to apply the rules to the MAC of the network card in the PC(which is recorded on the router), it wouldn't matter if they "popped in a windows cd and reinstalled". 😉
