ok here is my problem i want to build a decent machine and i know athlon 64's are great for gaming but i dont only use my computer only for gaming

right now intel dual cores and ddr 2 is cheaper then the a64 counterparts so im kinda leaning toward intel

how can i find out what cpu is for me ?

im thinking about going either a intel 830 dual core or a x3800 64

exactly what else do you use it for..

i mean i got an 3800 x2 because i retired my dual xeon 2.4. Out of the box its a lot faster and it was in my budget. Its also 64bit allowing me to use server 2003 64 and when VM ships their 64bit support.. I'll be able to do all my junk. So I pick amd because 1. great performance
2. I use 64bit os and 64bit VM
3. I do adobe work also
4. I dont play games (64mb pci video in this one)

i got 1000.00 for the computer it self i have the monitor and keyboard mouse and OS already and speakers

also i noticed i can get 2 gigs of ddr2 ram for a intel based system cheaper then 2 gigs of reguler ddr ram

and a 650 processor 3.4 ghz 64 bit for 275 bucks

Hey if you like Intel go for it, I am an AMD fanboy just like most on these forums.

If you prefer Intel go for it, just take a look at some of the benchmarks that are out there and what people are saying about the P4 D cores and the AMD X2's. I think you will find that the Intel runs much hotter and also seems to lag in many area's vs. the X2.

I currently run Intel... but I think the next time I do a big upgrade it's going to be AMD...

Check out the benchmarks and let them do the talking for what you want to do with your PC...

cough..cough.....words of wisdom from a newbie......LOL

I may be new to these forums, that doesn't mean anything.

I am not a n00b in the computer industry, I was working on PC's when you were still sucking your mom's t!tty.

wow, with 1000 dollars you can build a really nice amd gaming rig.

get an x2 3800+
2gb corsair value
epox 9npa+ ultra
6800gt or x800xl

the MAIN question is, WHAT do you plan to use the pc for? if not gaming, then what? (video encoding, checking e-mail, office work/writing, paperweight, etc...)

he said "i dont only use my computer only for gaming " which to me means that he mostly games, but he doesnt do that exclusively.

Please DONT check out the benchmarks and let them do the talking. Benchmarks can tell just what the benchmarker wants to say.
I know I used to run them almost daily when I worked for IBM and Amdahl. The only true test is your workload. At Amdahl we had a way of catching live transactions, many varieties and benchmarking with 'real world workloads'. We even did b/marks for military and they posted armed guards at the center to make sure that nobody messed with the results.

Lots of issues influence your decisions. Right now, I run a Dell rig just because Dell made me an offer I couldn't refuse. That means that its an Intel rig. I have always built AMD rigs for years and love them. (since I used to do consulting for AMD, why wouldn't I).

All you have to do is look at Toms stupid hardware. He flips and flops like a politician. He was all over AMD in a good way when they first opened their plant in Dresden (Deutchland Deutchland uber alles).

Look at what appeals to you. Make your own choice.
