How do i know if my hardware dvd decoder is doing the decoding?

I have a Ati AIW 8500DV. How do i know that its using the built on DVD decoder chip? Im assuming with ATI's DVD player its using it. But if i decide to use windvd or powerdvd, are they using the DVD decoder chip also or is it using software decoding?
