how do i know if my cdrom can enable dma

I have a new 24x verbatim (supposed lite on rebadge) from office max. When I burned an audio cd, my computer lagged like crazy. I attributed it to dma being off, but I went to settings and the primary and secondary settings all have "dma if available." Is my burner not dma-able?

I'm pretty sure all recently made drives support dma. I don't know what would happen if you tried it and it didn't support it though. Somebody help this dude out since I don't know what I am talking about but do know how annoying burning can be with optimal settings not engaged.

Have you checked DMA for the drive in Device Manager ? I recently installed a LiteOn DVD drive for a friend, and had to manually select DMA (er, select it), as it defaulted unchecked.

Right click "My Computer", select "properties", select the "Device Manager" tab, double click CDROM and double click the drive in question.

Select the "settings" tab, and verify that DMA is checked. Easy as that.

Also do some testing to see, it might run faster with "sync data transfer" checked or unchecked, try it each way.
