I do suggest that you tie him up with a stout chain and also make sure the stake is reinforced with concrete

Heh, well some cats could teach dogs a thing about fighting. One of our neighbor's collies got out when the owners shut down the invisible fence. It came over when one of our cats, Scotty, was outside. The collie chased Scotty, scared the hell out of him too; well, the collie wound up running home with a damaged ear; Scotty was fine. Never saw the dog in our yard again.
Sounds like your doberman wouldn't be a good playmate for a cat though.:Q
If you ever do see the cat, try to find out who's it is, and tell them to keep their cat inside. It'll benefit them as well - if it doesn't go outside, it's less likely to bring in all kinds of fun parasites like ticks and fleas, which carry their own assortment of diseases. Plus, if the cat is like my other cat, Beverly, it loves to sneak outside, eat lots of grass, then come in and throw it up for us. Maybe she has a delusion of being a mother bird, bringing food in for the young ones.
