How do I keep neighborhood cats out of my garden?

I built a few raised planting beds in my backyard. They've become the neighborhood litter box.

I don't want to put fences around the planting beds for aesthetic reasons. Any thoughts as how to keep cats out? I've heard that fox urine might deter them.

Stop using MeowMix as fertilizer :D

*edit* neighborhood cats seriously take a dump in your garden beds? What are you growing and how do you amend the soil?

I've caught 3 different cats in the act. I find about 5 holes dug a day.

I'm growing tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, carrots, radishes, and various herbs. They seem to enjoy rolling around in the cilantro and they keep digging up my lettuce and radish seedlings.

Isn't the most common solution to put cayenne pepper flakes into the topsoil to discourage the cats from digging?

I've read that before.

I like the motion sensor sprinkler idea... except that come July, you'd end up with the neighbors' kids playing in the garden.

Do the cats have owners? Have them have a nice soft dirt area for them. If not, consider making one yourself. Otherwise, the sprinklers...

get dogs.

when the dogs become a problem, get monkeys to deal with them.

when the monkey's become a problem, you're going to have to dig up your flowers to put in a pool to fill with sharks with lasers and all your gardening issues will be resolved.

No need, just get gorillas, when wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.

I came here to suggest snakes and mongooses, boy do I feel silly.

ROLF. Cats may be cute but god are they assholes. Just giant, fluffy rats.

I've had the same two cats keep invading my yard. I suspect this is what killed a couple of my cedar trees. Apparently they don't like to poop and pee on their own territory. One good thing about where I live is coyotes. Outdoor cats make a quick lunch for Wile E. Cats really do need to be leashed if you put them outside.

Call animal control, maybe they will let you borrow some cat trap cages so you can catch 'em and bring 'em to the humane society....
