I see you haven't heard of air, or air resistance,. Gravity is only half of the equation.

GL getting significant air resistance with something this size. Also, love your idea of using something big and flat - guess how long it will take before that turns sideways and falls like a rock.

You fail physics.

edit: to your ninja edit:
otherwise a rock and a piece of paper would fall at the same speed.
An egg is more like a rock than a piece of paper. GL turning an egg into something resembling a flat sheet.

I see you are an idiot. No need for me to discuss this any more with you.

My daughter just informed me that the egg has to be standing straight up. Cannot be laying on it's side.

this is good. it's stronger that way.

you want the egg to be at the top of whatever device you can come up with that will crumple quickly but not instantaneously.

hell, wadded up newspaper might work well.

well...she has learned the first step of american business. When you have a problem you can't do, ask your superior. If your superior does not know, change your business to liquid egg production and outsource it

Fixed that for ya.

Your daughter needs to do this. It's called 'problem solving.' Even giving her hints or suggestions, handicaps the exercise. The object is not to get the egg to the ground unbroken, the object is to teach problem solving, critical thinking and, executing a plan.

I spent a year feeding school age kids and I can tell you that the majority of todays children have zero problem solving skills.
She's learning the most important lesson of all: Grades and appearances are all that matters, not personal effort. :D

Get a 5" x 5" x 5" cardboard box and some bubble wrap from Staples. Wrap the egg thoroughly in the bubble wrap, stuff it in the box, and fold the flaps shut. It'll survive the fall without a problem.

Yea, that's just the thing. She had a week to do this, but just now mentioned it tonight.

Put it in context. Is failing this assignment going to require her repeating the grade? Wait, I forgot about the horrors of 'no child left behind.'

Let her take responsibility.

i remember the egg drop in elementary school. i had mine in a cardboard box in some Styrofoam peanuts suspended with rubber bands. i always did my own shit because i thought my dad's ideas sucked. there were some crazy entries like a giant parachute... they had the local news covering it too.

Nope, she has just proven that she is project manager material!
No, she needs to create a PowerPoint presentation first to demonstrate why she was late in finishing the project. Bonus points if she manages to go over budget.

I don't think the egg is going to reach terminal velocity in 30ft retard.
That has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion. The velocity all along the path (up to and including the terminal velocity) will be lower with a lighter weight, given that all the other conditions are the same. Do you want to keep digging your hole?

Is active protection allowed?

Using a few accelerometers and circuitry to place a bias on a bath of Electrorheological fluid may allow multiple drops out of aircraft without breaking. ;)
