Seriously all the FAQ's ive seen dont detail it step by step, they start with "insert the install cd" and go from there. I have a 600 odd mb file sitting on my desktop... I unzipped it and put all the unzipped files onto a cd, figured that was enough, but its not bootable. How do i make it bootable so i can install ubuntu?

BTW on a related note: can the software with ubuntu 5.10 resize my primary partition? I have one 80gb hdd, and i want to create two extra partitions on it, one for windows 98, the other for linux, and i read that it can be done without erasing data, most applications that do this cost £££ but apparently the stuff with ubuntu can do it, so ill have no data loss. Is that true? Will my plan work?

well, i installed ubuntu yesterday for the first time and i did the same thing.

if you have nero, you have to put the .iso image onto a cd. you can do this in nero.
go to copy and back up and use the burn image to disc. You're going to have to look at all files to find .iso though since it isn't a nero image

and then put it in cd drive and re-boot.

I have no Idea about your 2nd question, but with the first question, just load up nero, and burn it on a bootable disk. The file you downloaded should be an ISO file. I just recently installed Ubuntu myself and I'm having alot of trouble with it right now :(.

Question for you. Does Ubuntu give you problems? I can't open synaptic for some reason.

1) Download appropriate ISO from their web site.
2) Use NERO or other program to burn a bootable CD.
3) Configure BIOS to boot off of CD.
4) Boot from CD and follow instructions.

I followed the on-screen instructions, used the default disk partition scheme, installed the OS, then installed Apache2, OpenSSH, and SAMBA. That was all I needed. I was done in under an hour. Couldn't have been easier IMO.

NOTE: I downloaded Ubuntu Server 5.10.

Just burn the ISO as an image, you lose the boot sector when you extract the files.

this was also my first time using Linux but first i was told to try knoppix and thought that was awesome so i formatted with just Ubuntu as my solo OS :)

Help! I can't access Synaptic! Is there something wrong? This is with the user name I created when I installed. When I click on it, nothing happens.

Almost all the drivers will be loaded automatically. Ubuntu has a live CD that you can test the system with without installing it (you just boot from the livecd and everything is loaded).
